Film 4 is an institute which has produced numerous quality films e.g slum dog millionaire and trainspotting. Film 4 is known for its use of both unknown and well known actors. which brings a fresh look and style to most of their films which are poignant but subtle.
Budget is vital for any film and film company as the size of the budget determines what can be used or created in the film at the expense of the people who have invested the money. film 4 are mainly known for having reasonable budgets but not on the scale as some of the major american films companies. But it must be remembered that a film company is a business and as with any business the prime prerogative is to make money as well as to create a film that attracts attention and does extremely well.
Some of the films that have been produces by film 4 are trainspotting and slum dog millionaire are both directed by danny Boyle and have both been very successful. film for to me produces alot of films which have dark suburban sets and locations which adds to the mise-en-scene of their features, which can be a major selling point for the movies but not all of their films are like this film 4 have produced many feel good films and funny comedies such as Borat and east is east.
Film 4 broadcasts from 11:00 am to about 8:45 am showing continuous movies created by them selfs and promoted on their own channel. Film 4 did not originally focus on broadcasting big budget movies, but nowadays broadcasts mainly mainstream Hollywood products such as "Saw". The channel frequently has themed nights or seasons in which a number of films centered around one genre, e.g 50 films to see before you die. As Channel 4 also owns a film production company, it shows many of its productions.
To alert the public to it going free-to-air, Film 4 launched a massive campaign directed by kevin spacey featuring major celebrities advertising Film 4 in odd ways. The slogan of the campaign was films for free which of course caught the eye of the british film watching public as great films for free was a hit.
Film 4 was originally known as Film Four and became Channel 4's second channel. when it launched on the 1st of november It was a subscription-only service available on satellite television via Sky, and most UK cable based services. It would cost £5.99 or £6.00 a month, eventually rising to up to £7. The launch night, which was also broadcast on Channel 4, was hosted by Johnny vaughn and the first film to be shown was What’s eating gilbert grape this was a massive hit and has drawn audiences ever since.
Later, additional channels were added, Film Four World and Film Four Extreme. Film Four World and Extreme were discontinued in 2003 after and replaced by Film Four Weekly, which screened four films across the week at the same time each day to make it easier to catch a film at least once. Film Four Weekly ceased broadcasting on 19th of july 2006 when the subscription service ended.
